Sedgefield Racecourse has a warm and relaxing atmosphere that can always be assured at ‘The Friendly Racecourse’, where high quality facilities provide close-to-the-action views.

As well as racing there are superb conference, banqueting, Christmas party, wedding and outdoor facilities. The entire course was redeveloped in 1977 with the new Sedgefield Pavilion opened in 1991. This contained several new bars and eating facilities as well as a number of suites. Four years later, the Theakston Suite was opened with even more facilities added. A brand new Weighing Room Complex was built in 1998 and even more additions to Sedgefield are likely to be in the course’s future.

The Track

Sedgefield is a jumping track with 19 National Hunt races taking place during 11 months of the year. The course is 1 mile 2 furlongs in length with a 250 yard run-in. the second last fence on the track is a treacherous open ditch with the last few metres uphill. In fact, the final uphill section is said to be among the steepest in Britain.

Event Highlights

One of the main races on the Sedgefield calendar is the Champion Hurdle which takes place in March. It is for horses who are four years and over and takes place over 2 miles 1 furlong. The Durham National is another featured event and takes place in April. It has a prize fund of £9,000, is open to horses who are five years and over and takes place over a tough 3 miles 4 furlong course.
