Stockton just loves to dance.
And they proved it this weekend as thousands turned out to strut their stuff on the high street. Admittedly, part of the draw was street dance favourite Ashley Banjo and fellow members of Britain's Got Talent-winning dance troupe Diversity. The event was the culmination of a project aimed at getting Stockton dancing. Described as “his most ambitious dance project to date” Ashley has been visiting locations across Stockton persuading people to join him in a street dance routine. And judging by the size of the crowds at the finale it looked like a good proportion of Stockton – and indeed Teesside– turned up. Ashley Banjo and Diversity get Stockton dancing in the sun pictures and video show crowds drawn to Britain's Got Talent winners Doing her thing was 21-year-old Rebecca Hague, of Oxbridge. She said: “I watch Ashley Banjo on TV and found out about this through Twitter.” Keen to show off her best moves she enlisted work pals, Madeleine Van Kessel, 22, Roger Dack, 33, Avtaar Singh, 18, and Sham Khan, 20, to come along and join in the routine. All staff at Specsavers, Stockton, she said some had booked a day’s holiday especially.“I enjoy dancing, but I’m quite bad at it,” said Rebecca. Sham Khan, of Ingleby Barwick said: “We all like to have a dance.”He added: “I am always the first person dancing at a wedding.” Roger Dack, of Stockton, said: “I don’t mind a dance. But there is usually some alcohol involved.” Stockton has a proud dance heritage. Through the war years and up until the 1960s it boasted three dance halls. But in the 70s the dance halls began to close. Ashley’s plan was to get the market town dancing once again by creating an event to reinvigorate the whole town. He said: “I have always believed that street dance is for everyone, whether you are part of a crew or going solo.“This is the biggest challenge I have ever taken on, let’s hope I can give Stockton their dancing spirit back |
